Mazda surprised the New York International Auto Show with taking the wraps off of an all new version of the iconic MX5 sports car, one that adds new style to the brand. The MX-5 RF (for Retractable Fastback) offers a fully automatic retractable targa-like roof that disappears under a hard clam-shell cover into the trunk area. So, we suspect luggage storage will sacrifice.
The vehicle on stage was a prototype so we could not play with the operation, however Mazda stated the top can be operated at road speeds of up to 10 miles an hour. There are faster operating hardtops out there but we challenge this is one of the best looking.
According to Mazda the same 2.0-liter and 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder gasoline engines found in the present soft top MX-5 will power the RF so we suspect the power will be the same. The 2.0-liter offering the same 155-hp and 148 lb-ft. of torque. Each engine can be paired with either a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission.
We offer that if Mazda can keep the price tag under control the MX-5 RF just may one of the most popular new sports cars of the decade.
