Where are all the Hummers? Not where you might think

Where are all the Hummers? The Hummer dealerships, with their distinctive simulated corrugated galvanized steel roofs are gone, converted to other purposes. On the other hand, Hummer vehicles, the Hummer H2 and H3, didn’t simply evanesce when GM pulled the plug on the simulated military vehicles. To some extent, they’ve kept on rolling. And according to GMParts, there are more Hummers in California than any other state.

So California wins largely by being large.

“Before we tabulated the data, I would have guessed that Texas or perhaps Colorado would have the most Hummer vehicles in the USA. However, there were more searches for Hummer parts from California than any other state,” noted Matt Mylan, Director at GMPartsCenter.net.

In keeping with Mylan’s expectations, Texas is indeed in second place. The relatively populous states of Florida and New York come in third and fourth.

The total isn’t by actual nose count, however, but by internet parts searches. GMParts reasons that the more parts searched from a particular location , the more Hummers there are there that need them.

Internet searches for Hummer pats between 2010 and 2014 were added up, with the searches geolocated to find out where the Hummer parts searcher—and thus the number of Hummer, assuming they all break down or need parts replaced at a constant rate. Of course, Spork Marketing, which performed the study, admits that a source of inaccuracy is that Americans and Canadians make a lower number of web searches for parts per Hummer than in other countries.

Another potential shortcoming of the methodology is that it does not consider the number of miles traveled by the typical Hummer in a given area. It’s even more surprising, then, that the highest number of Hummers per capita is population dense Connecticut, although in the wealthy New York City-bedroom communities are more likely to afford the care and feeding of the beasts.

Sport Marketing also looked into international web searches. Hummer sales weren’t limited to the United States, so its not surprising that oil-rich Saudi Arabia is the number one Hummer parts searching country outside of the U.S. Number two, definitely a surprise, is Japan. Canada doesn’t come in until sixth, behind Russia, England and Turkey. Turkey? Really? Hey, we’re just reporting GMParts’ numbers.
