The new Bentley SUV: No one likes to be excluded from the sandbox

Everyone scoffed at Porsche when it announced it was entering the SUV market. Well, with the Cayenne having a record-setting 2013, plus the introduction of the new Macan, and Jaguar, Lamborghini, and others luxury marques throwing their hats into the ring, Bentley wants a piece of the action. Although we don’t have photos yet, Bentley did release a beautiful one-minutes tease of what’s to come, and from the little we can discern, it’s going to be a stunner. Slated for release in 2016, the rumor is that only about 3,000 will be built, and about 2,000 already have been spoken for with pre-orders. Bentley is expecting the new SUV to help raise sales worldwide by about 15,000 units, which, if it drives anything like the Continental GT we tested, will not be a problem. Bentley also has stated that it will comes with a plug-in hybrid option for 2017, and most likely a diesel version for foreign markets.

Violette_V8_05Make no mistake, this is a tough market segment, and while Lincoln, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Lexus are all in it for the long haul, they won’t be able to compete with the Bentleys of the world when it comes to craftsmanship, status and, more than likely, its astronomical price.

060312_DMD_0812While Bentley introduced a concept of the SUV, called the EXP 9 F two years ago in Geneva, the short video shows off a “quite” Bentley front end with a mesh grille, large, round headlamps, and pretty cool aero-blade-style wheels, with some cues matching the concept on a high level only. Check out the video and let us know what you think.
