Delaware driver avoids elephant accident…not

pink elephantWe don’t know whether it was pink, but a Delaware man said he swerved off the road to avoid hitting an elephant, crashing into a guardrail after said alleged pachyderm crossed the roadway in front of him on southbound I-295.

However, the man also told Delaware State Police that he had smoked marijuana dipped in PCP before crashing, making the elephant story somewhat suspect, especially since elephants on the lose are generally considered rare even in Delaware and safaris no more common, even if you are like Phipps driving a 1998 Land Rover.

Delmarvanow.com reported that police also said the driver, Samuel Phipps,  “appeared to be impaired” and charged him with operating a vehicle under the influence of a drug. It was his seventh offense  after six earlier incidents, although it was not reported whether the earlier episodes involved a Dumbo…other than himself.  Phipps was also charged with not having insurance and was held after the Sept. 28 accident on a $21,000 secured bond.
