Turkmenistan’s president Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov drove in his country’s first automobile race. Guess who won.

Berdymukhamedov, who also triumphed in the country’s most recent election with 97.14 percent of the vote against seven opponents, drove to the event in his Bugatti sports car, and upon arriving reportedly asked, “Can I take part?” According to an Associated Press story in the Washington Post, it was “a request nobody in Turkmenistan would be likely turn down.”

Driving a Turkish-made Volkicar, the president record the best time in the time-trial, and the car will now be donated to the national sports museum.

Berdymukhamedov is said to have plans to make the energy-rich Turkmenistan a sporting power, including the development of “competitive automotive sports”.

We suspect, however, that anyone with plans for a racing success in Turkmenistan had best not try to take the checkered flag in any race with The Protector.
