Kia revealed photos of its new flagship Kia K9 sedan today. The Kia K9, which has been known by its KH code name, will be Kia’s first rear-drive automobile when it goes on sale in Korea in the first half of this year.
Kia has released no specific information on the K9, which hasn’t stopped speculation, primarily that the K9 is based on the Hyundai Genesis platform. Kia has no equivalent model to the Genesis, so a pairing like the Kia Optima/Hyundai Sonata would not be unreasonable. The Genesis, like the forthcoming K9, is rear drive. Ostensibly, the Kia K9 could share the powertrains with the Genesis.
Although the Korean launch has been announced, Kia did not say when and where else the Kia K9 might be sold. Speculation has the U.S. in the crosshairs, but if Kia elects to sell it here or elsewhere in the English-speaking world, we suggest another name than K9. There’s no future in calling your own car a dog.
